THE IRRADIATION OF DEFECTED ZIRCALOY-2 CLAD UO$sub 2$ FUEL ELEMENTS CONTAINING FLUORIDE IMPURITIES (IRRADIATION TEST X-204)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4781692
Tests confirmed the hypothesis that rapid catastrophic failures of Zircaloy-sheathed defected UO/sub 2/ fuel elements can be caused by the presence of approximately 500 ppm fluoride in the UO/sub 2/. The previous, satisfactory behavior of defected fuel elements is typical of the more normal production material. It is therefore suggested that the failures encountered were due to the high fluoride content of the UO/sub 2/ used in the tests. The fabrication, irradiation testing, and post-irradiation examination of the elements in this experiment are described. (auth)
