In March 1962, the new Atomic Law was enacted as basic law and contains the first comprehensive regulation of the use of atomic energy in East Germany. It consists of only 14 paragraphs and is divided into 8 sections: general regulations, organs for the application of atomic energy, protection areas, radiation protection, liability, penalty regulations, definitions, and concluding regulations. Before the enactment of this law, regulations covering the field of nuclear energy were enacted in a series of statutes concerned principally with radiation protection and organization. The international collaboration of the Eastern Zone is limited to the eastern bloc. (J.S.R.)
