THE DISINTEGRATION OF NEON AND KRYPTON BY NEUTRONS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.

A high-pressure gas scintillation counter filled with neon or krypton was used to study disintegration cross sections for neutron bombardment. For neon, cross sections were measured at 6.2 to 10.7 Mev neutron energy with a neutron energy spread of about 60 kev. Partial cross sections were determined for which the residual nucleus of the reaction of its first three excited states. For krypton, the cross section for disintegration by charged-particle emission was measured at 6.4 to 12 Mev neutron energy with a neutron energy spread of about 150 kev. Considerations based on reaction energetics and on the penetrability of the Coulomb barrier suggest that most of the observed krypton disintegrations correspond to (n,p) reactions. (auth)
