Cosmic ray variations may be due to changes in meteorological factors (temperature and pressure of the atmosphere), geomagnetic threshold, and primary flux. The cosmic ray intensity undergoes periodic changes with time (11 year, annual, 27 day, daily, and semidiurnal), and nonperiodic changes (a decrease during a magnetic storm, and an increase with a solar flare). The geomagnetic minimum is not symmetric with respect to the earth's axis, but is closer to the earth in the direction of the sun. The orbital motion of the earth around the sun results in a diurnal variation with a cosmic ray maximum at 6 hours in the morning. In periods of high sun-spot activity, the radial plasma flux from the sun (solar wind'') gives a cosmic ray maximum at noon. The effect of inhomogeneous magnetic field, and diffusion of particles from outer space are considered briefly. Thirty-two references are given. (TTT)
