SEPARATION OF ISOTOPES. Annual Progress Report
Results of exchange experiments with O/sup 18/ and CO/sub 2/ indicate that the overall separation is controlled by exchange at the lower temperatures, measurements of enrichment factors for O/sup 18/ in the exchange of CO/sub 2/ with the carbamates of several alkyl and alkanol amines in methanol showed that they decrease in the order primary > secondary > tertiary. Results of measurements on some of the properties of solutions of amine carbamates are summarized. Experiments on the catalysis of nitric oxide exchange with 6M HNC/ sub 3/ showed that an increase in acidity through the addition of H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ significantly increased the exchange rate. Enrichment factors for the exchange of NO/sub 2/ with N/sub 2/O/sub 4/ were measured at -10, 0, and 10 deg C and at 27 to 300 deg C. A comparison with the results expected on a simplified model of the system indicated that thermal diffusion effects contribute to the overall separation at higher temperatures. (J.R.D.)
