A STUDY OF (p,pn) REACTIONS IN MEDIUM WEIGHT NUCLEI AT 370 Mev

Cross sections for the (p,pn) reaction at a proton energy of 370 Mev were measured with Sc/sup 45/, Cr/sup 50/, Cr/sup 52/, Mn/sup 55/, Fe /sup 56/, Ni/sup/58/, Co/sup 59/, Cu/sup 65/, Ga/sup 69/, and Ga/sup 71/ targets. All of t he (p,pn) cross sections, except those for Sc/sup 45/, Cr/sup 50/, and Ni/sup 58/ , were found to be about sixty millibarns. No quantitative explanation could be found for these three divergent cross sections, al of which are lower than the others. Cross sections for (p,2n) reactions on Cr/sup 52/ and Fe were also measured. Calculations based on the (p,2n) -- (p,pn) ratio show that at least 85% of the (p,pn) reactions proceed by a pure knock-on mechanism. (auth)
