The kinetics of reduction of ZnO by CO in the absence and presence of SrO are compared. The effects of SrO on the acceleration of reduction by CO were studied, along with the kinetics of carbonation of SrO according to the reaction, SrO + CO/sub 2/ = SrCO/sub 3/. The carbonation of approximately 0.56 gm samples of SrO was studied over the range of temperatures, 500 to 850 deg C, at atmospheric pressure. The concentration of CO/sub 2/ in the gas used for carbonation was varied from 100 down to 1.4% through the use of either pure CO/ sub 2/ or of Na-CO/sub 2/ mixtures of controlled composition. Reduction was significantly more rapid in the mixture containing SrO than in the SrCO/sub 3/-- ZnO control. The relative rates of reduction were estimated to be 11: 1 at 750 deg C and 5.9: 1 at 677 deg C. The CO/sub 2/ liberated by the reduction of the ZnO was quantitatively absorbed when SrO was present. The increase in reduction rate with SrO was attributed to the complete removal of one of the gaseous products within the confines of the sample. The carbonation of SrO was observed to take place in two stages, the ftrst of which was much faster than the second. The slow stage was most pronounced at lower temperatures with intermediate values of P/sub co2/. The rates of both stages were virtually independent of temperature. The rate of the initial stage was directly proportional to P/sub co2/ when P/sub co2/ was less than 0.2 atm. The results are thought to indicate that the course of carbonation was controlled by gaseous diffusion processes in the gas phase enveloping the sample and in the pores of the reacting solid.
