IMPROVEMENTS IN WELDING

A process for welding low-alloy-content steels is given which is particularly useful for welding thick workpieces on site, such as in the construction of large reactor containment vessels. The process comprises preheating the weld members to a first temperature (200 to 250 deg C), depositing at least one layer of weld metal on each weld face, cooling the members and layers at a rate to avoid forming an undesirably hard structure, bringing the members together for welding, heating the layers of the weld metal to a second temperature (100 to 125 deg C), and uniting the members by depositing more weld metal between the layers. The weld metal has a low C content relative to that of the members, substantially the same mechanical properties, and a smaller tendency to harden on cooling. (D.L.C.)
