THE EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE SURFACE TENSION OF MOLTEN NEODYMIUM (in Russian)

Neodymium metal was purified by filtering off the oxide from the metal in vacuum by means of special vessels of beryllium and tantalum. The surface tension was obtained by determining the maximum pressure in a gas bubble. Capillary tubes and vessela of beryllium oxide were employed to minimize the corrosive attack by molten Nd. A cylindrical tantalum foil was used as a heater. Purified argon was used as the working gas. The surface tension sigma of the molten Nd was found to vary from 688 dynes/cm at 1030 deg C to 674 dynes/cm at 1186 deg C. These results are about 12% higher than the theoretical value of 600 dynes/cm. (TTT)
