DEVELOPMENT OF AN IMPROVED AGITATOR FOR THE REDOX SEPARATIONS PLANT
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4779000
A low-speed agitator for use in the Redox Process was constructed and operated for over 10,000 hr under maximum vibration conditions without developing weaknesses. The gear-reduction drive, submerged and separate external shaft bearings, and rotary mechanical shaft seals were eliminated by development of a vertical, hollow-shaft, 225 rpm electric motor. The motor accommodates a 4-in. diameter hollow agitator shaft. The motor bearings provide support and guidance for the shaft and paddle turbine assembly. Agitation and uniform blending of the contents of a 10-ft-diameter by 10-ft-deep tank is possible with less than one minute of operation. (auth)
