MONITORING OF IODINE-131 IN AIR USING ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4778608
>I-131 adsorption efficiency of activated charcoal was examined for the purpose of routine I-131 monitoring in air. A standard cartridge consisting of 14 to 22 mesh size charcoal in a 1.5 inch long glass tube of 0.5 inch diameter was designed for sampling I-l3l from air. The standard cartridge picks up I-131 with an efficiency of 98% and can be easily counted in a well-type scintillation counter. Air activity of 0.005 mpc can be detected in a 20 minute sample taken with a 40 1/min pump and higher activities in proportionately shorter time. (auth)
