REACTOR PRESSURE VESSELS OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

Journal Article · · Tech. Dig. (Prague)
OSTI ID:4778311
The development work in using prestressed concrete for making reactor pressure vessels is discussed. Two types of prestressing are consideredof secantial and circular stressing. The research study shows that prestressed concrete is well able to comply with the requirementsof transmission of internal gage pressure and heat, and sealing of the reactor. As for biological protection, it is quite obvious that prestressed concrete is satisfactory. Sealing the vessel against permeation by gas is still a problem waiting for solution. Owing to its inherent porosity, concrete is not fit to provide reliable sealing even if the formation of cracks is prevented by prestressing. The inner surface of the reinforced concrete pressure vessel requires, therefore, a protective sealirg layer. (N.W.R.)
