Development of Prototype Process Systems for OMR

Three pilot plant process systems were operated to provide engineering data for the design of Advanced Organic Moderated Reactor (AOMR) processing systems. The performance of purification, degasification, and waste gas and water treatment systems was studied and compared with expected performance. The systems were previously constructed and evaluated as part of the Piqua OMR process development program. Operation of the purification system was carried out to evaluate column performance and compare predicted and experimental results. Operation of the degasification system was limited to the problems associated with development of a satisfactory procedure for determining the water content in Santowax OMP. In addition, development of special steam-tracing for differential pressure cells and rotameters was required to insure reliab1e performance, System control and reliability were demonstrated in the operation of the purification and degasification systems. The waste gas and water treatment system was employed to remove radioactive and organic contaminants from the gaseous and aqueous effluent streams of the purification and degasification systems. Contaminants in the gas stream were removed by water scrubbing followed by filtration. Aqueous activity was maintained below the maximum permissible concentration by means of filtration through a diatomaceous earth filter.
