ACTION OF X RAYS IN DIFFERENT PERIODS OF THE HAIR CYCLE IN CASTRATED C3H MICE

Since in several pure strains of mice the histologic structure of hair follicles of the skin undergoes changes after castration, gonadectomized mice were used to study the effect of irradiation. Total or partial irradiation with 200 rad 1 day after castration (halr follicles in telogen phase) causes a slight loss in pigment and a dose of 400 rad produces, besides a marked loss in pigment, a significant delay in hair growth. In animals irradiated with 200 or 400 rad 8 or 11 days after castration (hair follicles in anagen phase 2 or 6) there was no difference from control animals. Partial irradiation with 800 or 1200 rad 1 day after castration causes an intense loss of pigment and a marked delay in hair growth. When partial irradiation is performed 8 days after castration the effects are less evident, whereas if the same doses are applied 11 days after castration only the 1200-rad dose elicits visible effects. This experiment demonstrates the variation in radiosensitivity according to the phase of the hair cycle induced by gonadectomy. (H. H.D.)
