WALL THICKNESS TESTER FOR TUBULAR OXIDE FUEL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4776686
An instrument is described that uses magnetic reluctance to measure the total wall thickness of uranium oxide fuel elements. The tubular elements have an outside diameter of about 2 inches, a Zircaloy outer cladding thickness of 0.030 inch, a UO/sub 2/ thickness of about 0.250 inch, and a Zircaloy inner cladding thickness of 0.030 inch. After fabrication the elements are tightly swaged on magnetic steel mandrels and the measurement is made before the mandrel is removed. When the total wall thickness was in the range 0.290 inch to 0.320 inch, the measured wall thickness was correct to within 0.001 inch. (auth)
