LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTOR. APPLICATION TO SEPARATION OF STRONTIUM AND BARIUM

Journal Article · · Ind. Eng. Chem., Process Design Develop.
OSTI ID:4775876
A laboratory-size, 20-stage, multiple-contact, unlimited-feed,'' countercurrent-flow, liquid-liquid extractor is described. The apparatus consists mainly of glass parts, joined by polyethylene tubing and mounted in a steel cradle that can rotate on its horizontal axis. The reservoirs for feed liquids are an integral part of the assembly. Proper rotation of the assembly causes the flow of liquid to, through, and from the extractor. Use of this extractor is exemplified by a study on the liquid-liquid separation of strontium and barium. Starting with an aqueous feed 0.5M in Sr-Cl/sub 2/ and 0.5M in BaCl/ sub 2/, a barium product containing less than 100 ppm of strontium was delivered in the aqueous phase, while moderately pure strontium was obtained in the organic product phase.
