The production and development of molten refractory products is described with special emphasis on alumina, kaolin, and zirconic concentrates as charge components. The refractory materials are called baddeleyite corundum or Bakor in short, as their crystalline phases represepent baddeleyite (ZrO/sub 2/) and corundum ( alpha -Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/). The service life of Bakor in glass furnaces is 20--30 months at 14880-1500 deg C. Experiments were made for the production of Bakor-33, which contains about 33% ZrO/sub 2/, 50% Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ , and 12--13% SiO/sub 2/. Industrial alumina, zircon free from iron, and industrial zirconium dioxide were used as charge components. Additions: marble dust and calcined soda. Bakor-33 is molten at 1900--2000 deg C and cast at 1800- 1820 deg C. Heat treatment takes 8--10 days. Its specific gravity is 3.6--3.7 g/ cm/sup 3/, the weight of unit volume 3.3-3.6 g/cm/sup 3/, the maximum apparent porosity 3%, and the softening point at 2 kg/cm/sup 2/ lies at 1740 deg C. Analysis: 13.72% SiO/sub 2/; 49.78% Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/; 0.71% FeO/sub 3/; 0.84% CaO; 0.11% TiO/sub 2/; 1.92% alkalies; 32.92% ZrO/sub 2/. By using Bakor-33 the glass melting temperature can be increased from 1450 to 1600 deg C and the service life of the glass furnaces to 36--48 months. Main sources of scrap (40%) are cracks, large shrinkage cavities, and convexity of lateral faces, which is mainly caused by the imperfection of the production process. (OTS)
