MAGNETIC EFFECTS OF GEOMAGNETICALLY TRAPPED PARTICLES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4775047
A means of calculating the magnetic field produced by the motion of geomagnetically trapped particles due to an arbitrary distribution of trapped particles at a point which is not in the trapping region is described. Calculations were made of the fields at the surface of the earth due to narrow belts of trapped particles. The importance of various harmonics is illustrated. It was found that particle motion around the equatorial plane in the trapping region is the principal source of magnetic field due to trapped particles. The magnetic field throughout the earth due to particles trapped on dipole shells is essentially uniform. (M.C.G.)
