THE SPECIFIC HEAT OF SIX RARE EARTH METALS BETWEEN 0.4 AND 4 K

Results of heat capacity measurements on samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holium, and ytterbium between 0.4 and 4 deg K are reported. The magnetic specific heat C /sub M/, caused by interatomic exchange interaction between the 4f electronic spins, and the nuclear specific heat C/sub N/, due to splitting of the nuclear spin states by the interaction with the 4f electrons, are also calculated and the results are presented.
