PRODUCTION OF HAFNIUM-FREE ZIRCONIUM COMPOUNDS

A simple process is given for separating Zr from Hf and vice versa. The process comprises dissolving the Zr and Hf tetrachiorides in an organic liquid which forms additional compounds with the chlorides, cooling the solution to 0 to -50 deg C, and precipitating HfOCl/sub 2/ from the solution by addition of concentrated HCl. After the HfOCl/sub 2/ is separated from the solution, ZrOCl/ sub 2/ may be precipitated therefrom by adjusting the HCl concentration. The organic liquid preferably is n-propyl formate or n-butyl formate. (D.L.C.)
