SOLVENT EXTRACTION BEHAVIOUR OF PLUTONIUM CUPFERRATES. I. Pu(III)- CUPFERRATE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4773932

The solvent extraction of Pu(III) cupferrate into chloroform from 0,15 M perchlorate media and 1.0 M chloride media was investigated. Cupferron is shown to oxidize Pu(III) in acidic solutions, the highest rate of oxidation being at pH values between 1 and 2. This oxidation is not minimized by the presence of reducing agents such as hydroxylamine perchlorate or ammonium sulfite. Pu(III) appears to be eight co-ordinated in the extracted cupferrate, and extraction constants were calculated on this basis. Preliminary results for the solubility product of Pu(III)cupferrate are reported. (auth)
