COSMIC-RAY COMPOSITION AT 10$sup 17$-10$sup 18$ ev

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
Evidence is presented, based on the proton-energy dependence of the proportion of mu particles produced in proton-induced showers, that cosmic primaries having total energies greater than about 10/sup 17/ ev are nearly all protons. The ratio of the number of mu particles to the total number of particles is measured in air showers for which the primary energies are above 10/ sup 17/ ev, and the distributions indicate that these showers are produced by primary protons.
