NUCLEON ANTI-NUCLEON ANNIHILATIONS INTO TWO PARTICLE FINAL STATES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4773235
Modified Born approximation calculations were made for the annihilations NN yields KK and NN yields LAMBDA LAMBDA . The transitions are assumed dominated by peripheral interactions. The effects of the other available channels are represented by an absorptive potential fit to the NN elastic scattering. From a geometrical optics solution of the potential problem, a form for the modification of the Born approximation partial wave amplitudes is suggested. Comparison of theory with experiment results in agreement for pp yields K/sup -/K/sup +/ at 1.61 Bev/c and pp yields LAMBDA /sup 0/ LAMBDA / sup 0/ a t 3.30 Bev/c for coupling constants and parities obtained by many other workers; disagreement that occurs for pp yields A LAMBDA /sup 0 LAMBDA /sup 0/ at 1.61 Bev/c is taken to indicate an inadequacy of the geometrical optics approximation. Further experimental consequences are discussed. (auth)
