An investigation was made to determine the number of pi -mesons in the flux of nuclear-active cosmic rays, with momenta above 1.8 Bev/c. The apparatus consists of a 6850 mass spectrometer, arrays of proportional and scintillation counters, and copper and lead absorbers. It affords a measurement of the momentum of a particle, the ionization produced by it, as well as other characteristics determined from the interaction in the copper and lead filters located underneath the mass spectrometer. By suitable counter gating the apparatus discriminates against energetic electrons, mu -mesons, and particles created within the experimental equipment itself. Since the pion inelastic cross sections are independent of momentum above 2 Bev/c, the number of pions in the flux of nuclear active particles can be determined from the number of positive and negative particles undergoing inelastic nuclear interactions. In the region from 1.8 to 22 Bev/c about 3% of the particles carry a negative charge. These are presumably all pions. The ratio N pi /sup +//N pi /sup -/ was determined at 720 Mev/c to be 0.90 plus or minus 0.15. Assuming that this ratio does not change it is concluded that pions constitute 6 plus or minus 2% of all nuclear active particles in the region of 1.8 to 22 Bev/c. The experiment was not able to measure the number of K-mesons, protons, and deuterons above 2 Bev/c. (TTT)
