The application of differential spectrophotometry to the determination of Hf in the presence of Zr was investigated using rriandelic acid, chloranilic acid, quercetin, and xylenol orange methods. A theoretical discussion of the apPlication of Method II (transmittance-ratio) spectrophotometry to the determination of Hf in the presence of Zr is included. The relation, 4C/C = DELTA A/SxC, which is the basis for the determination of optimum concentrations, was derived. Only the xylenol orange was found to be really satisfactory for the determination of 0 to 5% HfO/sub 2/ in ZrO/sub 2/, which was the desired range. Although the other three systems were not found to be satisfactory for the desired range, it was found that they should be applicable to wider ranges of HfO/ sub 2/ in ZrO/sub 2/. The use of mandelic acid made it possible to quantitatively precipitate Zr and Hf as the tetramandelates and by holding the total weight of the tetramandelates constant it was then possible to measure them differently in the ultraviolet region. A standard curve was constructed from 5 to 50% Hf tetramandelate in Zr tetramandelate. Chloranilic acid was found to be applicable to the determination of about 5 to 50% HfO/sub 2/ in ZrO/sub 2/. Differential measurements were made in the ultraviolet region in one molar perchloric acid solution. Buercetin seemed to offer a possibility for the determination of small amounts of Hf in the presence of Zr. Standard curves were run for solutions containing 0 to 10% HfO/sub 2/ and 0 to 5% HfO/sub 2/ in ZrO/ sub 2/. The xylenol orange method was tested on three Zr-Hf ores. These were analyzed for both the total oxide content and for the% HfO/sub 2/ in the total oxide. The results were found to compare favorably with x-ray results. (P.C.H.)
