NUCLEAR REACTOR FOR GENERATION OF POWER AND FOR IRRADIATION OF A LIQUID ORGANIC MATERIAL
A reactor consisting of a reaction chamber, conduit means for a fluid coolant for the reaction chamber, thermal insulation arranged about the reaction chamber, and a chamber for radio-conversion reaction of liquid organic material disposed about and surrounding the thermal insulation is described. The spacial relation of the chamber containing the liquid organic material to the reaction chamber is such that the liquid organic material absorbs gamma rays and fast neutrons, at least 1% and usually 4% of the total nuclear energy released, and supplies at least 25% of the moderation necessary to sustain the nuclear reaction. The amount and arrangement of the thermal insulation are dependent on the difference between the temperatures desired in the coolant and the liquid organic material being processed. This temperature difierence is at least plus or minus 30 deg C. (NPO)
