The preparation and properties of XeF6 are reported. Reactions were carried out in a stainless steel vessel at 1000 psi and 350 to 450 deg C. In all cases a mixture of volatile products was obtained. The more volatile fractions always concentrated XeF6. The purity of the samples was monitored by infrared spectroscopy. In the purest XeF6 sample, the twin bands, nu 2 + nu 3 and nu 1 + nu 3 were observe d at 1154 and 1189 cm -1. The formula for XeF6 was established by chemical analysis. The compound can be reduced with H2 to form HF and Xe. Preliminary vapor pressure measurements gave: 0 deg C, 6mm; and 20 deg C, 27 mm.
