HEAVY WATER MODERATED POWER REACTORS. Progress Report, June 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4772206
Methods were devised for eliminating the changes in nuclear reactivity that accompanied changes in the operation of the main cooling system of the HWCTR. A brazing tech nique for sealing the ends of thin-walled Zircaloy-clad U fuel tubes is now being used in the fabrication of short specimens for irradiation testing. Remedial measures are being taken to prevent future tubes of uranium oxide from failing by collapse of the inner sheath, as did a recent tube during a low exposure Savannah River irradiation test. Further data were obtained on the burnout heat flux with forced flow of boiling water. (auth)
