FLUX DISTRIBUTIONS IN UNBALANCED ATRCE REFERENCE CORES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4772184

A series of flux measurements was made in unbalanced ATRCE cores. The flux was measured in all of the fuel elements, radially and circumferentially through the individual elements. The following power splits, as defined by the average power in eight elements of a lobe, were measured (the center number is the average of the eight elements around the center flux trap): Run 136, 40-65- 65; Run 137, flux at the centerplane was determined in neutrons per square centimeter-second for Run 196 as follows: Test Loop A-5 (Lobe 1), 3.08 x 10/sup 7/ ; Test Loop A-5 (Lobe 2), 3.92 x 10/sup 7/; and Test Loop A-1 (Lobe 3), 5.11 x 10/ sup 7/. The reactivity worth of two partially inserted hafnium neck draw rods was measured under three separate reactor conditions: six neck draw rods in each neck, control cylinders balanced; six neck draw rods in each neck, control cylinders unbalanced; and ten neck draw rods removed, control cylinders balanced. The total worth of the neck draw rods depended on the balanced or unbalanced positions of the control cylinders and also varied as a function of the number of draw rods in the neck filler piece. Partially inserted draw rods had little effect on the peak-to-average axial flux ratio computed for the axial distribution through the fuel region, the experiment mockup, and the reflector. (auth)
