The outer tube containing a U--1 wt% Si core was successfully processed as an irradiation candidate for the HWCTR. The tube meets all specifications and is ready for shipment to SRL. To guide the selection of a heat treatment for the capsule irradiation specimens containing cores of U--350 ppm Fe--900 ppm Al, the alloy was evaluated after various treatments. The heat treatment selected consists of a beta treatment in 730 deg C salt for 15 minutes, oil quenching, reheating in 5O0 deg C salt for one hour and then air cooling. Heat treatments including quenching from the gamma phase resulted in cracking of the alloy and deterioration of the core-cladding bond. Twelve specimens containing the U -350 ppm Fe--900 ppm Al cores were completed and sent to SRL for test irradiation in lead-insulated capsules. The processing of these specimens included coextrusion of tube stock, sealing of the specimens by brazing, heat treatment and evaluation. The quality of the tubes was demonstrated by destructive tests of sections adjoining the blanks used for the irradiation specimens. (auth)
