THE EFFECT OF NORETHANDROLONE ON EXPERIMENTAL DENTAL CARIES AND RADIO- PHOSPHORUS UPTAKE IN RAT MOLARS

The effect of Norethandrolone on the uptake of phosphorus in molar teeth in animals on high and low phosphorus caries-test diets was studied. The molar teeth were examined for smooth surface dental caries incidence, hemisectioned in a mesiodistal-sagittal plane, stained, and again examined for caries incidence. Norethandrolone-treated animals had a greater incidence of dental caries in molar teeth than respective control animals or animals on a diet supplemented with 2% Na//sub 2/PO/sub 4/. The addition of 2% Na/sub 2/HPO/sub 4/ to the diet of treated animals decreased the caries incidence in molar teeth of the animals so that it approximated that of control rats fed a caries-test diet supplemented with 2% Na/sub 2/HPO/sub 4/. The addition of 2% Na/sub 2/HPO/sub 4/ to the basic caries-test diet reduced caries incidence in animals sustained on the diet, in comparison to animals fed basic diet only. Radiophosphorus levels in the molar teeth of Norethandrolone-treated animals fed a high phosphorus diet equaled the radiophosphorus levels in the animals on a high phosphorus diet alone. No statistically significant difference existed between the radiophosphorus content in the molar teeth of animals treated with Norethandrolone and respective control animals. No change in the effect of Norethandrolone on radiophosphorus uptake in molars of rats, with or without added phosphorus, over a time interval was shown. (P.C.H.)
