THE EFFECT OF THE WHOLE-BODY X-RADIATION ON THE CHOLESTEROL CONTENT IN THE BLOOD SERUM OF RABBITS AND DOGS

Disturbance of the fat--lipoid metabolism plays an important role in the pathogenesis of radiation sickness. This problem was studied by determining the cholesterol content of the blood serum of rabbits and dogs exposed to wholebody radiation, attempting to clarify simultaneously also the effect of BETA - cystosterol which was found to reduce the cholesterol content of blood. The method of S. M. Neuschlosz (Biochem. Z. 225: 123(1930)) was used for the analytical measurements. Results showed a sudden increase of the cholesterol count of the blood serum of the rabbit 24 hours after irradiation; the concentration decreased again to a normal value in the animals which recovered. Dogs did not show such an increase during the first days. In both types of animals which died of radiation sickness the cholesterol content continued to increase considerably until death. The beta -cytosterol did not affect the dynamics of the cholesterol reaction and did not exert a protective effect. (TTT)
