HIGH-TEMPERATURE HEAT CONTENTS AND ENTROPIES OF SESQUIOXIDES OF EUROPIUM, GADOLINIUM, NEODYMIUM, SAMARIUM, AND YTTRIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4770149
Results of high-temperature heat content measurements on sesquioxides of 4 rare earth elements, Eu, Gd, Nb, and Sm, and the closely related element, Y, at 298 to 1802 deg K are reported. The original heat content data and smooth values are included, together with smooth entropy increment data above 298.15 deg K. Equations representing the heat content results were derived and are included. It is indicated from the observations that the cubic varieties of the sesquioxides of Eu, Gd, and Sm are unstable with respect to the monoclinic varieties, and that the conversion of cubic to monoclinic is irreversible. The sesquioxides of Gd and Y have about the same average heat capacity for the measured temperature range, from 298 to 1800 deg K, and this value is lower than for any of the other 3 sesquioxides. For the same temperature range, the other sesquioxides have average heat capacities that increase in the order Nd-Sm-Eu. (P.C.H.)
