The Anomalous Thermal Expansion of Single Crystals of Gadolinium

Previous measurements of forced magnetostriction in gadolinium single crystals have indicated that there should be a large anomaly in the thermal expansion along the hexagonal c axis, and a smaller anomaly of opposite sign in a direction perpendicular to the axis. Measurements of thermal expansion are reported which confirm these expectations and show that parallel to c there is an unusually large discontinuity at the Curie point and a large contraction over a considerable temperature range.
