BLOOD PROTEIN FRACTION CONTENT AND THE STATE OF THE ANTITOXIC FUNCTION OF THE LIVER OF ANIMALS EXPOSED TO REPEATED DOSES OF X-RAYS (in Russian)
The effect of previous exposure of test animals to sublethal doses of radlation on subsequent exposures was investlgated by examining changes in the blood protein fraction and the antitoxic activity of the liver. One group of the male rabbits was exposed to a single lethal dose of 1200 r, the second to a sublethal dose of 800 r, followed by a lethal dose 2 1/2 months after the first irradiation while a third group received 2 doses of 450 each, followed by a lethal dose 4 weeks or 2 1/2 months later. Results indicated that exposure to multiple doses leads to a reduction of the total protein, albumin, and gamma- globulin fractions and to an increase of the alpha- and beta-globulin fractions. The quantitative changes of the protein fraction of the blood and the antitoxic function of the liver depend on the dose rate and on the time elapsed since the appearance of radiation injury: the larger the radiation dose, the more marked will be the depression of the blood protein fraction and of the antitoxic function of the liver. Animals exposed to 2 doses of 450 r each + a lethal dose 4 weeks later died faster than those receiving a single lethal dose; those exposed to 450 or 800 r followed by the lethal dose 2 1/2 months later exhibited acute radiation sickness and survived for 10 to 12 months, presenting a lesser degree of depression of the above mentioned functions. These parameters are considered good indicators of the acute radiation sickness. (TTT)
