THE RECOVERY AND INDIVIDUAL ISOLATION OF MACROSCOPIC QUANTITIES OF CERIUM, STRONTIUM, AND TRIVALENT RARE EARTHS FROM PUREX-TYPE FISSION PRODUCT WASTE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4769448
The rare earths are precipitated as the sodium doublesulfates and strontium is precipitated by using a lead sulfate carrier. Cerium and the trivalent rare earths are separated by precipitating cerium(IV) peroxyacetate from a hydrogen peroxide-- acetate buffered solution. The peroxy-- acetate process has the unique advantages, over conventional cerium-rare earth separations, of avoiding reagents corrosive to stainless steel and strong oxidants (which might volatilize ruthenium). Highly purified promethium is isolated from the trivalent rare earths by EDTA ionexchange chromatography. (auth)
