MEASUREMENTS OF NEGATIVE MUON LIFETIMES IN LIGHT ISOTOPES (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4769132
Negative muons from the Carnegie Tech synchrocyclotron were stopped in the following targets: separated isotopes of lithium (Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/) and of boron (B/sup 10/ and B/sup 11/ ), as well as natural beryllium, carbon, and oxygen. From an analysis of the corresponding time spectrum of the decay electrons, the negative muon lifetime in each of these substances was obtained. From a separate measurement of the mu /sup +/ lifetime (2.202 plus or minus 0.004 mu sec), the capture rates in the above elements were determined. They are (in units of 10/sup 5//sec): lambda /sub c/(Li/sup 6/)= 0.111 plus or minus 0.013, lambda /sub c/(Li/sup 7/) = 0.028 plus or minus 0.013, lambda /sub c/ (Be) = 0.11 plus or minus 0.02, lambda /sub c/(B/sup 10/)= 0.273 plus or minus 0.015, lambda /sub c/(B/sup 11/) = 0.227 plus or minus
