SOME EXPERIENCES WITH NOBLE-METAL METAL-SHEATHED THERMOCOUPLES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4769011

Temperature measurements on a gas-cooled experimental nuclear reactor led to a study of materials and configurations of noble-metal, metal-sheathed thermocouples. The study is not complete, but some conclusions were reached. The 1/16 in., 2-wire, platinum/9O% platinum, 10% rhodium thermocouples, in commercial platinum sheaths with magnesia insulation, are shown to perform well to 2400 deg F. Data are presented to show that magnesia is usable as an insulator in 1/16-in. sheathed thermocouples to 2900 deg F. A series of curves indicates that magnesia insulation depreciates very rapidly with increasing tendperature. There is a tendency for the curves to coincide above about 2400 deg F. These curves also show that even if room temperature resistance is high, it does not follow that elevated temperature resistance will be high. A method of determining the uncertainty of measurement in a specrfic case is described; this uncertainty is about plus or minus 1O deg F. An outline showing future test plans is given. (auth)
