AN INVESTIGATION ON LATENT IMAGE FADING IN ILFORD K.5 EMULSIONS

ABS>Fading in llford K.5 emulsions is investigated by blob counting and track photometry on proton tracks. The results cover fading values for energy losses between 1.2 and 20 kev/ mu , temperatures between -16 and +30 deg C, and relative humidities between 30 and 75%. A method of correcting for fading is presented. The order in which the grains of a given track disappear in the course of fading seems to be independent of the conditions of storage. From this observation the temperature and humidity dependences are derived. Fading increases exponentially with the temperature and with the concentration of moisture in the gelatin. The exponent is discussed. Oxygen seems to be of little importance for the process. The significance of the results for the theory of fading is discussed. (auth)
