Electrical effects produced by plastic deformation in sodium chloride crystals

Journal Article · · Philosophical Magazine
The potential developed across the faces of a single crystal of sodium chloride during plastic deformation was investigated in specimens containing known amounts of either calcium or strontium impurity. The stress at which this phenomenon first appears is found to be correlated with the yield stress of the material. The effect of size and shape of specimen and of rate of loading was also studied.
