The mechanisms of high-temperature oxidation in niobium, titanium, and their alloys are discussed from the viewpoint of the laws that control the oxidation velocity and implied processes. After a consideration of the factors that affect the oxidation processes (oxygen solubility and diffusion in the metal and in the oxide film), the effect of the addition of an alloying element on these factors and the direct effect of the alloying elements on the oxidation velocities are studied. The practical problems are discussed in the light of experimental results obtained on complex alloys of niobium. (tr-auth)
