STUDIES OF RESPONSE OF ARCHES AND DOMES UNDER DYNAMIC LOADS
The accuracy of an approximate design method for arches subjected to dynamic loads is evaluated by comparing the predictions of this method with the exact solutions. Primary emphasis is placed on the effects of loads which are uniformly distributed around the arch. The response of circular elastic arches under a moving pressure pulse is investigated by the modal method of analysis. Various combinations of natural modes are considered, and the combination of the smallest number of modes which satisfactorily approximates the exact solution is determined. It is concluded that good approximation to the true response can be obtained by considering the contributions of the first antisymmetrical and the first two symmetrical natural modes of vibration. A derivation is preserted of an approximate theory for the dynamic response of spherical shells loaded unsymmetrically by time-varying pressures. Nonlinear effects are considered so that the resulting equations reflect the buckling tendencies associated with largedeflection behavior. (auth)
