A method is given for bonding niobium to a graphite surface to form a niobium carbide coating. The method comprises disposing finely divided niobium as a thin layer on the surface, the distance between the niobium particles not exceeding one inch, degassing the surface in a vacuum, and rapid heating to > 2500 deg C to cause the niobium to melt and wet the surface.
