Radiation-Induced Effects on Water-Soluble Polymers in Their Aqueous Solutions

Aqueous solutions of 2 of the polymers PVA, PVP, PAM, MC, and PMAA, each with a 4% total concentration were irradiated by a 300-c Co60 source at 6.2 x 104 r/hr up to 1.0 x 106 at room temperature. Each polymer was also dissolved below its critical concentration for gelation. Results showed that networks between 2 different polymer components resulted if both were of the cross-linking type. However, gel formation was retarded if one of the 2 poly mers was of the degradative-type. Co-cross-linking was observed in the case of PVA + PVP, and the effects of irradiation on the viscosity and solubility of the polymers dissolved in methanol are discussed. A linear relationship existed between the gelation dosage and the content of the polymers in PVA + PVP and PVA + PAM. The network formation in the cross-linking-type polymers in aqueous solutions was retarded in the presence of methylcellulose.
