CHROMOSOMAL ABERRATION AFTER DIAGNOSTIC X IRRADIATION

Chromosomal aberration in a ieukocyte culture of the peripheral blood from a patient with medullary dysgenesis Ichromatin-positive Klinefelter's syndrome) was observed shortly after exposure to diagnostic irradiation; 31 metaphase piates in the ceils were analyzed. In 29, the usual chromosome number (47) and sex-chromosome constitution (XXY) were found. In 2 other piates an abnormally iong and apparently dicentric chromosome was present. The aberration might have been induced by the diagnostic irradiation or by background radiation. Alternatively, it might be related to the patient's abnormal karyotype, or it could have arisen in cuiture. Similar aberrations were not seen in other patients, either before or after diagnostic irradiation; and there is at present no evidence to suggest either that chromosomai aberrations of this type arise other than as a rare event, or that such aberrations are harmful.
