A STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF INTERMITTENT LOW-LEVEL Co$sup 60$ GAMMA IRRADIATION ON HEMOPOIESIS IN THE MONKEY (MACACA MULATTA)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4767308
The effect on hematopoiesis of intercurrent stress imposed immediately preceding radiation was investigated in the monkey. Three groups of Macaca mulatta monkeys were exposed to 200 r 100 r, and 50 r of whole-body radiation. The irradiation was repeated four times at 80-day intervals. The animals received an additional stress in the form of a phlebotomy (approximately 40 percent of the blood volume being removed) immediately before radiation. a fourth group of animals was phlebotomized and served as nonirradiated controls. The impairment and subsequent recovery of the bone marrow were assessed by means of Fe/sup 59/ uptake and repeated hematograms. (auth)
