ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE OF HYDROGEN ATOMS IN CaF$sub 2$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
An investigation is carried out of the electron spin resonance of a hydrogen atom in an interstitial position in CaF/sub 2/. The following aspects of the problem are treated: apparatus and sample preparation; a spin Hamiltonian with four parameters describing the g value and hfs of the hydrogen atom with the eight equivalent fluorine nuclei surrounding it; the electron-nuclear double resonance spectrum and the resonance linewidth; and an attempt to calculate the parameters of the spin Hamiltonian starting from atomic and ionic wave functions. The sample preparation technique permits deuteration of the specimens, and spin Hamiltonian parameters are found for the deuterium center. Most of the data are obtained at room temperature, but some data are given on the hydrogen center at 77 deg K. An explanation of the small proton-deuteron and temperature-dependent differences of the spin Hamiltonian parameters is proposed. (auth)
