A NUCLEAR-PHOTON ENERGY CONVERSION STUDY. Quarterly Technical Report No. 1, April 1, 1962-July 1, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4766711
Capabilities of materials that could possibly be used in the components of a nuclear radiation powered electrical energy source that consists of a radioisotope, a luminescent material, and a photovoltaic device are discussed. Considerations affecting the efficiencies of the components are examined. A silicon junction solar cell is selected as the photon-to-electrical energy converter, and a cadmium sulfide phosphor activated with silver or copper is chosen for nuclear radiation-to-photon conversion. Beta-emitting radioisotopes, particularly strontium-90, are presentiy used as emitters. (D.C.W.)
