A TIME OF FLIGHT SPECTROMETER FOR SLOW NEUTRONS
A time-of-flight spectrometer ior slow neutrons with a planar slit chopper and a 10 channel time analyser was constructed. The spectronmeter is designed ior total cross section measurements in thermal and sub-thermal energy region. The energy analysis is possible in the energy interval from 0.002 ev to ca l ev at the resolving power 13.2, 6.6, or 3.3 mu sec/m. The minimal error of energy E is 1.5%. The parameters of the chopper are: the height of the slits-1.5 mm; diameter oi the rotor--120 mm; and rotations per sec: 25, 50, and 100. The parameters of the time analyser: channel widths: 10, 20, 40 and 80 mu sec; and delay--from 0 to ca l4 msec. Test measurements were made at thc reactor channels 5 and 6 of the Polish reactor EWA. The neutron spectrum was measured and the results were compared with the Maxwellian distribution for the temperature of 335 deg K. the cross section oi silver was determined and compared with the data oi Neutron Cross Sections Tables and with the measurements performed with the crystal neutron spectrometer, transmission through Al and Be was measured, and the obtained local maxima were compared with the cut of values corresponding to the Bragg scattering.
