IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO DEVICES FOR THE DETECTION OF FISSION PRODUCTS IN THE COOLANT OF A NUCLEAR REACTOR
When nuclear particles pass through a dielectric medium with a velocity higher than the velocity of light in this medium, a radiation arises known as Cherenkov radiation. In a transparent dielectric reactor coolant, e.g., water. beta Cherenkov radiation. Preferably a by-pass to the reactor cooling circuit comprises a variable speed pump, delay means for thc coolant, and a radiation detector with a photoelcctric cell. With the variable speed pump and the delay means, the time necessary to convey the fission products from the reactor to the detector is controlled so that the activity induced in the coolant itself has disappeared. Nearly all activity comes from nitrogen-16 which has a short decay period. (NPO)
